Miss Mayhem by Rachel Hawkins

Life is almost back to normal for Harper Price. The Ephors have been silent after their deadly attack at Cotillion months ago, and her best friend, Bee, has returned after a mysterious disappearance. Now Harper can focus on the important things in life: school, canoodling with David (her nemesis-turned-ward-slash-boyfie), and even competing in the Miss Pine Grove pageant.
Unfortunately, supernatural chores are never done. The Ephors have decided they’d rather train David than kill him. The catch: Harper has to come along for the ride, but she can’t stay David’s Paladin unless she undergoes an ancient trial that will either kill her . . . or make her more powerful than ever.
It has been two years since I read the first book in this series and now that I’m finished with Miss Mayhem, I remember why I put this book off for so long.
This is a fun series but it’s also really draining. Every chapter ends with drama, a cliffhanger, and more drama. It’s kind of exhausting. I really like the writing style and I felt like the characters weren’t so annoying in this book. I think the plot lacked a lot of direction. This felt a lot like a filler book and not a lot of important stuff happened in the 273 pages of Miss Mayhem.
I still liked this book for the most part. Once I stopped being my normal critical reader self, I enjoyed it a lot more.
