Review: Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

17167166“A line that should never be crossed is about to be breached.

It puts this entire castle in jeopardy—and the life of your friend.”

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

SLAY SARAH J. MAAS, SLAY.
If that gives you any indication how this review is going to go, I honestly don’t know how more straight forward to be.

This whole second book is the biggest push off into one of the best fantasy series I’ve ever read. I love this book due to the fact that Celaena Sardothien develops herself EVEN FURTHER into the most bad ass female assassin ever. The development of what Celaena has become is just pure….amazeballs.

Maas’ writing is super on point, I just gobbled this whole book up. Her world building is just phenomenal the way she describes everything from the library to the stone work in the castle, it’s like you’re there right behind each of these characters following them through this setting and story.  I cannot explain how much I appreciate the flawlessness that is Sarah J. Maas’ writing.

And HOLY CHAOL. My god that man is flawless wrapped in perfection sealed with complete swoon worthy things. Gah I love this man and I’m 100% Team Chaol. Whenever I read or hear him, my heart swells ( yep, you heard right, I’m totally lit crushing right now).

I’m also so happy with the fact that Crown of Midnight moved into a more action packed and less…love triangle/Celaena bitchfest. I think Throne of Glass was mostly her kind of in…a teenage “Who do I love?” / “I’m supposed to be an assassin but I’m distracted by swoonworthy men” book. Which had me wary about starting Crown of Midnight. Also, the scene with the witch. WAS BALLIN’. One of my favorite scenes, along with another one further down towards the end of the book. ALL THE ACTION YOU GUYS. I literally am getting to a place where I’m just starting to not know what words to string together to write this review. That’s how flipping awesome this is. I need Heir of Fire….now.

I’m still stuck on Chaol. I can’t let go, I don’t want to let go. I’m way too emotionally invested in him.
