It’s Recommendation Friday!

This week I’m going to be recommending one of my all time favorite books.

True Grit by Charles Portis

True Grit tells the story of Mattie Ross, who is just fourteen years of age when a coward going by the name of Tom Chaney shoots her father down in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and robs him of his life, his horse, and $150 in cash. Mattie leaves home to avenge her father’s blood. With the one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest available U.S. Marshal, by her side, Mattie pursues the homicide into Indian Territory.

True Grit is eccentric, cool, straight, and unflinching, like Mattie herself. From a writer of true status, this is an American classic through and through.

This book is unlike anything I’ve ever read. It’s so well written and Mattie is such an amazing character. She speaks her mind and doesn’t take any crap. She’s so determined in everything that she does.

True Grit is written from the perspective of a 14 year old girl so it’s actually Young Adult. So if you’re unsure about True Grit because you normally read YA, no worries.

My favorite thing about True Grit is how it was first published in1968 but Mattie is written so strongly. She’s the perfect female lead and she could beat most modern day YA characters in the dust.

So if you’re looking for a fun, interesting book with an insanely well written female character, I recommend True Grit.
